Big Adventures: Moving West

Much has happened in the past two years besides the avid neglect of my blog.  I spent the last three summers directing for iD Tech Camps (UNLV, UCSD, and UCLA respectively).  I have volunteered my time to the Potter League for Animals and had a pretty wonderful experience there.  I have explored a number of child care opportunities, and been an admin assistant/graphic designer/spreadsheet creator/technical support/whatever else I’m randomly asked to do up to and including light electrical work for a multi branch optometrist’s practice.  Last summer I made an unsuccessful attempt to move permanently to the west coast.  This summer I am attempting the feat once more, armed with more knowledge, a collaborator (my boyfriend, Jason), and a renewed sense of determination.

With most of a summer’s worth of iD Director pay sitting in my bank account, I have temporarily moved in with my boyfriend’s family in The Valley, and am in the process of looking for work and an apartment.  Both goals have proven to be very slow in the going and I’ve learned a few things between the last two summers:

-Establishing residency is much easier than I thought it’d be.  Apparently all that is required is that you cross into the state with the intent to reside there and acquire a state ID.

-It is incredibly difficult to get a job without a permanent address.  It is almost impossible to get an address (or, in my case, an apartment) without a job.  These two facts lead me in a circle of frustration.

-A sadly overwhelming majority of potential employers do not take the time to send even a “no, thank you” to their applicants.

-Southern California traffic is EXACTLY as ridiculous as everyone says.

-An incredible amount of stress, disappointment, and boredom can be entirely worth it when you’re in the right place with the entirely-right person.

With that last point as my guiding star, I will keep pushing ahead and see where the next few months take me.
